mSpace

mSPace is a framework that gathers information sources and presents them to the user in a single window. It can potentially be applied to any subject, provided the basic information is available. The researchers say this means users will no longer have to wade through lists of undifferentiated data when researching a subject.

In its current form, mSpace appears to be a demonstration applied to a restricted subject domain: "We had: a listing of classical music pieces, classical music audio files, classical music information sites (out on the net) and a set of classical music categories. We applied the mSpace framework to these resources in order to associate them with each other. The mSpace interface lets us then explore and manipulate the information in the space." Thus, it appears that some work (how much?) is required to use mSpace with a new domain.

The mSpace architecture (http://www.mspace.fm/technology/architecture/) suggests some similarities with oiur data web ideas, but appears to wrap the data stores rather than directing users back to them.

It is possible that mSspace may address some of the targets of our data webs work "The mSpace software framework is available for free download so anyone can sling an mspace over information spaces. We're particularly interested in how mSpace can be used to help improve access to information - especially when a keyword search is either to specific or too vague to help put together a picture of a domain of interest." (http://www.mspace.fm/projects/)

In particular, the mSpace work might be useful for implementing ideas for using a multi-pane browser to navigate semantically organoized domain knowledge (http://www.mspace.fm/research/).

There is a paper co-authored by mc schaefel and David Karger that suggests the mSpace approach is conceived as a way of displaying Semantic Wew data, in a fashion not entirely dissimilar to David Karger's Semantic Lenses (http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/12911/).

There's also a paper: "mSpace meets EPrints: a Case Study in Creating Dynamic Digital Collections", and many others.
