VTLS VITAL
Started as a spinoff corporation from Virginia Tech in 1985, VTLS provides integrated library automation, digital imaging services and radio frequency identification technology to libraries, museums and corporate research repositories throughout the world.
VITAL is a front-end for Fedora used by Oxford. There is a May 2006 press release: http://www.roanoke.com/business/wb/63769. Apparently, "Oxford University announced recently that it would use three products from VTLS Inc. as the backbone technology for its virtual library" but there's no indication what those three products might be.
VTLS offers the following products (http://www.vtls.com/Products/index.shtml):
- VALET for ETDs: a customizable, web-based interface that allows remote users to submit Electronic Theses & Dissertations into a FEDORA™ digital object repository. This is offered as a free, open source solution.
- VALET is a fuller, commercial package that supports submission of, Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETDs), Journal articles, Working papers, Book chapters, Conference papers, Images (http://www.vtls.com/Products/valet.shtml)
- VITAL is a commercial offering: "... an institutional repository solution designed for universities, libraries, museums, archives and information centers. This software is designed to simplify the development of digital object repositories and to provide seamless online search and retrieval of information for administrative staff, contributing faculty and end-users." It is not immediately clear what aspects of this functionality are provided by FEDORA, and what are add-ons from VTLS, though there is this: "VITAL provides workflow extensions, management utilities, robust indexing, advanced searching capabilities and specialized content displays to enhance the functionality of the underlying object repository architecture". (http://www.vtls.com/Products/vital.shtml)
- VTLS offer some other open source components, described at http://www.vtls.com/Products/osc.shtml:
- The Metadata Extraction Service via JHOVE
- The Handles System
- The Content Model Configuration Service
- The SRW/SRU Interface for exposure of repository content
- The Web Crawler Indexing and Exposure Service
Looking forward, when we have evaluated the core FEDORA repository software, it will be useful to discuss with the Oxford library team what additional features are provided by VITAL. Media:Example.ogg
