Aspire
- This is a commercial software from a company with joint partners from U.S.A and the Netherland.
- There are more than 40 customers
- It provides a portal solution, which is desired by the customers through OCLC+PICA's experience
- Another product, ZPortal, which was not demonstrated provides a large-scale federated searching facility
Aspire
- aiming to provide a Google-like searching: avoiding multiple searches but only using keyword searching. This is desired by the customers, as stated by OCLC+PICA.
- the keyword searching could use titles or keywords provided by the data publishers/providers. OCLC+PICA is aware of the prerequisite for good-quality keywords publishe by the data providers.
- it is based on the ASP (Application Service provider) model(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_service_provider). Again, another framework that is welcomed by the customers.
- uses Athens sign-on and supports Shibboleth
- it requires repositories using Z39.50 profile
- a renewaqble subscription with an access of ~20 repositories costs £3,000 per year.
Demo
- after signing on using an Athens account through a local library interface, users can start simple search using a keyword
- users can choose the collections (e.g. journals, music archives, etc) to be searched
- in the advanced search interface, users can choose how to index their search results, and choose the fields to search
- users can save their search results and sent them to other people. But there is no support for exporting these results in a special format, such as EndNote, etc.
- users can save their search history, and re-run their searches in order to
Observations
- there is particular tailored supports for searching multi-media resources. There is a long list of available resource repository that a subscriber can choose from. However, it is not clear how many multi-media repositories there are.
- Aspire is treated as a compact product comparing to ZPortal in order to provide an affordable price for institutions. ZPortal seems to be have more flexibility than Aspire, such as custermisable, or allowing different departments to sit on it within an organisation.
- There is Web service provided for Aspire and it is not clear whether it is so for ZPortal.
- It seems very much targetting at libraries rather than research resources.
