Other projects

  • http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/repositories/digirep/index/CDLOR - CDLOR project (Community Dimensions of Learning Object Repositories; e-learning software for JORUM
  • http://www.ontonet.org/ - Ontogenesis Network; "A network of excellence to foster the creation, ontogeny and evolution of biological ontologies.". Is holding a series of meetings to explore practical strategies and techniques for creating and evolving ontologies in support of scientific research and other computer-mediated activities.
  • JISC Visual and Sound Material Portal (http://edina.ac.uk/projects/vsmportal/ and http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/programme_portals/project_vsmportal.aspx). Based on PIXUS image portal developed by System Simulation (N.B. BioImageWeb Consortium members!) for content based image retrieval. Just started: run by Christine Reese of EDINA.
  • http://www.vre.ox.ac.uk/ibvre/ - Integrative Biology VRE Project, due to finish summer 2007. Matthew Mascord at OUCS is working on this. They have images of heart simulation, etc.
  • http://nost.gsfc.nasa.gov/isoas/ - David Duretta's work on OAIS (Open Archives Information Systems), an abstract model for long-term preservation, has led on to a major European project called CASPAR (Cultural, Artistic and Scientific knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval, which is of relevance.
  • JISC Capital Fund: digitization of 1st World War archive in English faculty at Oxford - will be seeking a repository for images.
  • http://ask.oucs.ox.ac.uk/ - ASK project, e-learning reading list resources. Has expertise in service-oriented approach and METS metadata standard.
  • http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/projects/iemsr/ - JISC IE Metadata Schema Registry (Damian Steer is on staff). This may be very relevant to the future of data webs, though probably less so at this stage of development.
  • http://iesr.ac.uk/ - IESR registry of electronic resources - MIMAS / JISC.
  • http://www.chip-project.org/acknowledgements.html - CHIP Project - Cultural Heritage Information Personalization
  • http://aksw.informatik.uni-leipzig.de/Projects/Powl - Powl – Semantic Web Development Plattform. "The aim of the Powl project is thus to deliver a PHP and web-based ontology edititing and management solution to the Open Soure community."
  • http://www.openk.org/ - OpenKnowledge - "OpenKnowledge aims to break out of this deadlock by focusing on semantics related to interaction (which are acquired at low cost during participation) and using this to avoid dependency on a priori semantic agreement; instead making semantic commitments incrementally at run time." IST funded project including Edinburgh, Southampton, Open University, Trento, Amsterdam, Barcelona.
  • http://dart.edu.au/ - DART project - "The DART project is an ambitious proof-of-concept project to develop tools to support the new collaborative research infrastructure of the future. The project aims to enable researchers and reviewers to access original and analysed data, collaborate around the creation of research outputs, stored publications, plus add content, annotations and notes. It will also look at the collection of large datasets, including the remote control and automated data collection." Many of the topics look trelevant to our Data Webs work, but at the time of looking I can't see any useful work package summary information posted.
  • ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/ist/docs/digicult/gelfgren.pdf - AMUSID: Adaptive MUSeological IDentity-service - a project that explores identity and coreferences services in cultural heritage contexts. Uses CRM as a base ontology, or as a basis for finding coreferences. FORTH are a partner (Martin Doerr?). Goals, quoted from their first slide:
    • Create a European-level CH coreference identification service to connect existing content into networks of knowledge.
    • Provide added value for existing cataloging services through rich contextual associations with existing CH content.
    • Establish a framework for involving communities of practice for semiautomatic, distributed and scalable handling of semantic relations.
    • Support retrieval and research through complex relationships multiple-site CH content based on a standard model.
