MultimediaN N9C Eculture project
| Despite the amounts of public funding devoted to both cultural heritage and ICT infrastructure, online access to even the most important aspects of our past is still limited and highly fragmented. The objective of this project is the development of a set of e-culture demonstrators providing multimedia access to distributed collections of cultural heritage objects. |

The MultimediaN site contains a nice demonstration of semantically enhanced and faceted browsing of cultural resources.
Using the demonstrator with javascript enabled, notice how suggestions are displayed as a search term is entered. (The service works without Javascript, but without the dynamically displayed suggestions.
There's also an annotation demonstration, but it didn't work when I tried it.
Software system is based on SWI-Prologt. Implementation is entirely based on open web standards (XML, SVG, RDF/OWL, dia:tag:=SPARQL).
Four thesauri are used, with cross-vocabulary semantic annotations of terms to improve semantic interoperability. Uses VRA-core vocabulary (or a VRA-core-derived template) for annotation.
Overall, their approach is very dataweb-like, which is encouraging for us as it shows that the techniques can be made to work (with some amount of effort for adaptation). They note problems of metadata quality from OAI repositories.
