"The LIFE project supports repositories and preservation by analysing costs of digital curation and lifecycle management. LIFE2 will build on this ..."
From the original LIFE report: "For example ingest and metadata can form around 60% of the total dia:tag:=lifecycle cost for an e-monograph. This is an area where LIFE considers significant gains can be made."
At the time of writing (Jun 2007), LIFE2 has not yet published any documentation. The project description suggests it will focus on documenting new examplars. The LIFE1 report seems to be substantially dealing with the economics of life-cycle management, providing basic facts to allow some rational approach to making decisions about curation, preservatiuon, etc. We are rather approaching the whole issue from the other end, so it's not obvious that this work can help us in any specific way.
