What is Defining Image Access about?
- images as part of the scientific record
- "universals" and "particulars"
- the role of institutional repositories
- Example: gene expression images
- Discuss the need for domain-specific metadata

- Outline software design proposal
What we learned
- Not many image collections (yet)
- Very little domain metadata
- OAI-PMH is virtually a universal interface for repository metadata
BUT ...
- OAI-PMH is not a practical choice for exposing domain metadata from institutional repositories (with current software systems); it may be practical for workgroup repositories.
- a strategy for domain specific metadata based on composite or multipart objects, with one or more components containing metadata, may be easier to deploy uniformly.
- Tools exist for converting OAI-PMH results to RDF, but no SPARQL query-rewriting endpoints for OAI-PMH have been discovered.
- OAI-PMH does not provide mechanisms for searching on metadata values, so some level of preharvesting and pre-indexing is likely to be required, or use of a private repository search API.
- The performance of D2R server is yet to be evaluated, in contrast to some commercial products, such as Virtuoso and AllegroGraph
Recommendations
Design proposal
This is a Powerpoint file that has been used to assemble a design proposal (part 2), a rationale upon which that proposal is based (part 1), and an outline of how implementation of that proposal might be approached.
