How to upload a file

The Defining Image Access web site consists of two interlinked parts:

  • a wiki web, based on the Media Wiki software (the same software as is used by Wikipedia), and
  • a "content management system" (CMS) based on Drupal, that is currently used to host blogs and shared files.

The wiki only allows image files to be uploaded, intended for use within a wiki web page.

General file resources to be shared must be uploaded to the Drupal system; then they can be linked from pages in the wiki.

To upload a file as a shared resource for the Defining Image Access project:

  1. browse to http://imageweb.zoo.ox.ac.uk/drupal/node/17.
  2. log in to the Drupal system using your assigned username/password (this being a separate system from the wiki, a separate login is required - for now, at least).
  3. select an appropriate sub-page for attaching the file for sharing (at the time of writing, there are presentations and administration pages.
  4. after browsing to the selected sub-page, click the page's edit tab, then scroll down to the section headed "File attachments"; if necessary click on the section heading to open up the section to show a list of files and an edit box labelled "Attach new file".
  5. type in the full file name on your local computer, or use the "Browse..." button to locate it; then click the "Upload" button.
  6. after uploading a file, you may edit its name in the list of attached files to change the name part of the URI used to access it.
  7. the above steps can be repeated any number of times to upload multiple files.
  8. Important! when all files have been uploaded and renamed as required, click on the "Submit" button to lodge the files in the Drupal system. If you omit this step, the uploaded files will not appear on the server.

Note: there is a limit on the size of file that may be uploaded - currently 20Mb.

Also note: only selected file types may be uploaded, including .doc, .xls, .pdf, .ppt, .html, .jpeg, .png and a few others.

Once the files have been uploaded and saved, each link location can be copied (e.g. right click, then "copy link location" in Firefox) and pasted the URL into a page in the wiki web site, so it can be accessed directly from the wiki web.
