See also: California Digital Library (CDL) glossary
- OAI
- Open Archives Initiative. Sometimes used to refer to OAI-PMH
- OAI-PMH
- OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting
- Metadata
- data about data. Commonly used to refer to author, creation date, etc., of a document on the web. See also the CDL glossary entry.
From other proposal work:
- API
- Application Programming Interface, a defined technical interface that allows one software component to utilize functions provided by another.
- ATOM
- a development of RSS that is being standardized by the IETF.
- CIDOC
- CIDOC is the international focus for the documentation interests of museums and similar organisations. It is a constituent committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). See http://www.willpowerinfo.myby.co.uk/cidoc/cidoc0.htm.
- CIDOC CRM
- CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model
- CIDOC CRM Core
- a distillation of the essential concepts from CIDOC CRM that are applicable to activities that range beyond CIDOC's original domain of cultural heritage (e.g. scientific experimental procedures).
- CPU
- Central Processing Unit, the main "programmable calculator" that executes programs on a computer
- DOI
- Digital Object Identifier, a form of identifiers, and a framework for their allocation, used by publishing, digital library and other communities. See http://www.doi.org/.
- GPU
- Graphics Processing Unit, the main processor (CPU) on a graphics card. During the last 10 years, graphics processing has been increasingly offloaded from the main CPU to a separate processor (the GPU) on a separate circuit board (the graphics card). The performance of these cards has improved dramatically, enabling high quality 3D graphics at interactive rates on a common PC
- IETF
- Internet Engineering Task Force, the standards body reposible for defining and documenting technical interoperation specifications for the Internet, and some Internet applications.
- LSID
- Life Science Identifier, a form of identifier used by the life science research community. An LSID is a URN, which itself is a form of URI. See http://lsid.sourceforge.net/.
- NFC
- Near Field Communication
- OWL
- Web Ontology Language, a web language for describing classes of resources and how they relate to one another. See http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/ and http://www.w3.org/2004/OWL/.
- PDA
- Personal Digital Assistant, a handheld computer usually used as a personal organizer (e.g. as a calendar, notebook, etc.)
- POI

- RDF
- Resource Description Framework, a data model and format for describing resources on the World Wide Web. See http://www.w3.org/2001/sw/ and http://www.w3.org/RDF/.
- REST
- REpresentational State Transfer, a software architectural style for distributed web applications that employs a small set of common interface functions and flexible data formats to convey the complexities of application interactions. This approach allows distributed components to evolve more freely than RPC approaches for distributed applications.
- RGB
- Red Green Blue, the most common model to specify a colour. The amount of red, green, and blue light is specified on a range from 0 to 100%, which are then mixed to produce a single colour (for example, on a typical computer flatscreen a single pixel is made up of tiny red, green, and blue lights).
- RPC
- Remote Procedure Call, a software technique for creating networked applications, in which a function invoked on one computer is executed on another network-connected computer.
- RSS
- This acronym has various interpretations (originally: Rich Site Summary), and is used to describe a family of data syndication formats. An RSS¬data feed is essentially a collection of "article" descriptions, each of which contains metadata about some web information resource. RSS is commonly used to transmit summary information about the content of dynamic web sites and services. See also ATOM.
- SKOS
- Simple Knowledge Organisation Systems. See http://www.w3.org/2004/02/skos/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKOS.
