Dataset DOI notes

General

These notes are by Anusha, taken at a Dataset DOI meeting held at the British Library on 11 November

Details

About the API

  1. We had a quick overiew of the API and how to use it. I learnt that they have two versions - one currently in production and one in test phase. The API's for the two of them are slightly different, but we can work with both of them. If we use the test api, all of the DOIs we publish will be available only within BL and not globally (using the handle system of the Datacite consortium). This is a good place to test the API and use it as a sandbox. The test phase will last until the first quarter of next year. If we do publish DOIs using the test system, they will merge all the DOIs in the test environment with the global handle service sometime in the second quarter of next year. If we want to publish DOIs and want these made available in the global system, we need to use their current production API and would need to move over to using their new API from the middle of next year. They want us to test their new API (ofcourse).
  2. We can register a DOI by providing just the DOI and the uri for the resource. The uri could point to a place holder page. We can add the metadata at a later stage.
  3. The DOI will contain a prefix given by BL and a suffix that we create. The suffix can be of a format of our choosing. BL will not impose any rules.
  4. When registering / updating the DOI metadata, If we indicate that the metadata is of 'Reference Quality', then BL will publish this metadata in their primo catalog (or something similar. They are yet to finalize on how they will use this information).
  5. As of now, the only functionality available with their API is to register a DOI, add/update metadata for the DOI, get the information they hold on a particular DOI and delete a DOI (or mark a DOI as inactive). They are yet to build their search interface.

Metadata requirement

The metadata requirement will be published in early December.

How to register for the service and use it

  1. We need to provide them with a domain name where the landing pages will be hosted. They just need a domain name and not a specific host name. So 'ox.ac.uk' will suffice. The uri of the DOIs we register should be in this domain.
  2. They need to know the maximum number of DOIs we would issue. We will not be able to create DOIs if we exceed this limit (unless we talk to them and have our limit increased). If our requirement is high (above 500 DOIs), then we need to talk to them and come to an agreement.
  3. Once they have this information, they will provide us with a username, password and a DOI prefix for our account.
  4. For the first year, BL will not charge us for minting DOIs, but will do so from the next year. They did encourage us to make use of this first year and register as many DOIs as possible.
