Minutes

Introduction to RDF

See:

(RDF data merging examples have been added at the end.)

General

DMS provided a background progress report, noting that some ground had been lost due to unplanned staff absences. But overall, fair progress has been made on a number of fronts.

Initial investigation of RDFDatabank store, and discussion

Considerable progress has been made with accessing the databank, and a "unit" test suite is being developed to cement that understanding. We have successfully created programmatic submissions and updates using Python, and read back their contents to confirm they are being unpacked and presented as expected. AR is also using the test suite for testing and validating our reports.

We have also started on simple front-end display program for databank submissions, but are slightly impeded by uncertainty about manifest contents. This will be used to close the loop for getting researcher feedback about the content of submissions and its subsequent presentation.

(Background: GK in discussions about JISC SWORD - RDFDatabank should be able to support this in due course.)

There was some discussion of Databank access control and security policy, e.g.

  • Access control use cases
    • researcher can se and administer own submissions
    • head of RG can see and admin all submissions from group
    • head of div/dept can see everying, but not administer
    • public can see what is public

All leading to security policy framework for Datastore, and a default security policy to prime discussion of access control with research groups.

At this time, it's not clear when access control in Databank will be fully addressed - later this year was mentioned as a possibility.

Review proposed RDFdatabank API adjustments

We have proposed a small change to the URI-based API to simplify client application code, which has now been implemented in Databank.

Review partner interactions

We are very pleased with the interaction with AR - good progress being made. Shared use of test suite helps to ensure that technical miscommunications are minimized.

Deployment of local file store to research users

No substantial progress since last meeting, but further meetings with the Evolutionary Development and Elephant group are planned.

Shuffl

Have started on implementation of RDF/XML workspace serialization; intending to use JRON as intermediate format. Also working with rdfquery library for handling RDF in the browser.

A.O.B.

In response to a request from D-LIB for a summary of the ADMIRAL project, a brief project description has been submitted.

Extra storage capacity for Silk group: we'll need to explore options and propose cost-sharing: we have some spare hardware budget, but not enough to cover all research groups possible requirements.

DMS mentions new projects funded: OpenCitations and Dryad UK.

GK reported on a brief meeting with EIDCSR/SUDAMIH project members, and noted that they may have some requirements for metadata query that may not be in the current plans for RDFDatabank. WE shall try to maintain an ongoing dialogue, which may be related to the access control requirements (in the guise of a databank "gateway" system. Some of the discussion points were based on an informal discussion with Neil Jefferies at the Oxford ICTF conference.

Confirm actions

GK: provide simple example of RDF data merging

PJ: coordinate meeting with SUDAMIH/EIDCSR for "show'n'tell"

DMS: bibliographic RDF metadata example for Paul

Next meeting

Per schedule, this will be 19-Aug-2010

The previously scheduled meeting on 19-Aug-2010 has been cancelled, and the next meeting will now be on 16-Sep-2010 (updated 26-Jul-2010)
